Waynesboro City Manager Mike Hamp said Monday that he intends to "promptly" fill the now vacant city tourism director position. The News Virginian first reported online Friday that Lianne Crookshanks had resigned from the position she'd served in for more than nine years. Hamp called the tourism director role "an essential piece of our overall economic development plan." -

The top professional bass fishermen in the world will be competing in the Bassmasters Elite Series Golden State Shootout at Clear Lake this week. The event starts on Thursday and runs through Sunday, The tournament will field 93 boats the first two days. The field will be cut to 50 boats at finish of Friday's competition .

The air is so thick with exhaled nicotine you're tempted to ask for an oxygen tank to fend off fainting. Draped over a chair smack dab in the center of the room is the source of these fumes: Actor Rhys Ifans, a one-man chimney dragging on a cigarette, in a rumpled leather jacket, faded jeans and beat-up trainers.

The Owasco Lake Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be holding a Sportsman's Night Out event on Saturday, April 24, at the Mclean Fire Hall. The fundraiser is different than the usual DU dinner in that it focuses on all hunting and fishing equipment-- no silverware, statues or prints; just decoys, groundblinds, guns and other equipment. It is not limited to waterfowl hunting equipment. Tickets are $25 and include food, beverage, a DU membership and, if you are wearing blaze orange or camo clothing, a raffle ticket for a .300 Win Mag rifle.

Thinking green isn't just for St. Patrick's Day and local conservation groups are gearing up for more than a month's worth of events and environmental education programs starting in April. Activities will kick off on April 2 with local legislators participating in an opening ceremony set for the Johnstown Heritage Discovery Center, said Meghan Kerr, assistant director at Natural Biodiversity. "They're going to recognize April as Outdoor Heritage Month," she said.

It was a big step for area anglers and an even bigger step for ice fishing in the USA. The United States Ice Fishing team, captained by Freeport native Mike McNett, took the world championships, held at Rhinelander, Wisconsin's Boom Lake. It was the first time the world championship has been held in America. "It's been a long week, that's for sure," McNett said.
